Building a Wi-Fi Network for ATS.

Building a Wi-Fi Network for ATS

About project

iCore won an open tender for project implementation, having suggested creation of a Wi-Fi network on the basis of Aruba Networks equipment. ATS recognized this option as optimum based on general criteria: functionality and economic efficiency. The customer also took into consideration the system integrator’s high qualification, which was confirmed by cooperation while building the IT infrastructure.

Project Aims and Objectives

  • Arrange a wireless data transmission network (WDN) at the customer office for portable computers and mobile devices to access corporate network resources and the Internet.
  • Provide scalability – new devices added shall not change a network architecture.
  • Provide solution security – the network shall allocate resources’ access rights according to corporate security policies.
  • Provide simple administration – IT experts shall spend minimum time managing the network.
  • Provide high performance and fault tolerance – the network shall withstand a large amount of traffic, sufficient to comfortably carry out internal ATS work flows, and public events.

Solutions Used in the Project

iCore suggested creating the Wi-Fi network on the basis of Aruba Networks equipment. ATS recognized this option as optimum based on general criteria: functionality and economic efficiency.

The network architecture offered consists of 3 layers:

  • Aruba AP-225 Enterprise access points (APs) support the IEEE 802.11ac standard and have a bandwidth up to 1.3 Gbit/s;
  • the virtual network controller manages APs: any access point can act as a physical controller. If an AP fails, its function is automatically switched over to a different network element;
  • the AirWave monitoring system allows tracking the state of all APs, the virtual controller and WDN users.

Results and opportunities

After the project was completed, a high-speed and reliable wireless network was created in the Customer office that supports two access types. Corporate – ATS employees can access the Internet and corporate network’s approved applications or services. Depending on the access subsystem used, authentication is implemented using a domain account or a security key. Guest – users are connected to WDN only to access Internet. The access to corporate resources is prohibited. Authentication at a guest portal is implemented using login and password received according to internal regulations.
