MIPT Data Center upgrade.

MIPT Data Center upgrade

About project

iCore upgraded a data center’s engineering infrastructure for the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), namely the main server site of the leading Russian technical university. As part of the project a data center upgrade’s project documentation has been developed and approved, and basic engineering subsystems were upgraded.

Project Aims and Objectives

  • Centralize allocation of the University faculties’ computing resources in a single Data Center taking into account a future development of an IT infrastructure;
  • Upgrade the existing data center’s engineering infrastructure to increase its reliability, and also to support an installation of a more power-intensive IT equipment.

Solutions Used in the Project

  • Upgrade a cooling system and arrange air flows: locate a “hot” corridor, install a water cooling system based on chiller with a free cooling feature, on the basis of a Schneider Electric’s InfraStruXure™ (ISX) Type B infrastructure.
  • Upgrade an electrical power distribution system: assemble and install an input switching device (ISD), connect all technological consumers according to a new scheme. The Schneider Electric’s InfraStruXure™ (ISX) Type B equipment is used.
  • Upgrade the uninterruptible electrical power supply system: install a parallel UPS system to feed an IT load, and also a second UPS system to provide an uninterrupted operation of the engineering infrastructure. It is implemented as a part of the Schneider Electric’s InfraStruXure™ (ISX) Type B solution.
  • Install SCS: a scalable cable system based on Huber+Suhner solutions is built. Copper components of the H+S’ category 6А solution have been used in this project for the first time in Russia.
  • Create an automatics and dispatching system for all engineering systems on the basis of Delta Controls’ modular controllers.

Results and opportunities

We consider the SCC as the powerful development and simulation tool, that can be used by largest Russian research institutions and enterprises. We already obtained first results for actual resource-intensive scientific and applied problems in astrophysics, biophysics, aerodynamics and aero acoustics. We only begin to use the high potential of this computer complex, and in the future we plan to implement very interesting and fruitful projects. I am sure that SCC will be an enormous boon and will make an important contribution to the Russia scientific and technical development.
